Samuel Bates, the first pioneer to settle land in the Kendall Township, built his log cabin here in 1812. He was a veteran of the American Revolution where he had wintered with Washington at Valley Forge and had also participated in the Sullivan - Clinton Expedition into Western New York. His son Captain Henry Bares came to Kindall in 1814 and lived in his father's log cabin on this site until he built this cobblestone house about 1835. Both father and son are buried in the Morton Cemetery across the road.
Willard W. Bates, the third generation, gave his life in the Civil War. The Farm continued in the Bates family until the year 1900 when it was purchased by Sidney Strasenburg. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hume acquired the farm in 1960 from Mr. George Strasenburg.
Today the house stands in an excellent state of preservation and retains its original floors, moldings, etc. The Humes have restored the small window panes and the wooden shingles roof. Although modern conveniences have been added, there is no new wood in the house. Paneling in the modern kitchen was taken from the old pantry. Beams in the family room were saved from the remnants of the original 1812 barn. Floors, foods and moldings have all be refinished to the wooden surfaces. This, together with an outstanding collection of antique wooden furnishings, give the home a true country atmosphere. It is an operating 98 acre farm.
